Career outline I’ve worked in property, sports, fish and IT – all in a sales role.
What motivates you every morning to get up and work in the channel? Having fun and making money.
What has been the most over-hyped technology in the past five years? That’s a difficult one to answer. Many ‘weak’ technologies have recently turned a corner. Also, many major ‘brands’ were marketing technologies before they could actually deliver.
What will be the most underrated technology in the next five years? Five IT years is like 100 in human years, so it is difficult to calculate.
Which technology would you most like to have invented? WAN optimisation, such as Riverbed.
Do you have any regrets from your time in the industry? No. I have had a fantastic time.
If you could swap places with anyone in the industry, who would it be? Rory [the Zycko chairman]. I see him once a month between his international travel, sporting and charity commitments.
What is the biggest hurdle you have faced in your career? European Employment law. There are so many things that you have to be careful and aware of now.
What is the biggest success of your career? I am on the verge of it. Otherwise, building Zycko.
What piece of technology could you not live without? My car (and satellite navigation). I am largely a non user of ‘personal’ technology. The contracts I have won and continue to maintain are due to personal contact and traditional relationship building skills not my online services.
What would be your advice to anyone starting a career in IT? I suggest you apply for a job at Zycko.
What would you like for Christmas if you could have anything? My wife to recover from a long-term illness.
What is your favourite karaoke song? I don’t sing.
What would be the title of your autobiography? Never Stop Believing.
Do you have any phobias? Yes. Vertigo.
How many beers before you fall over? More than 30.
Number of staff you manage? More than 80.
What car do you drive? An Audi and a landrover.
Number of air miles you have? Don’t know.
