NetScreen eyes uRoam

Security vendor tipped to snap up security start-up

Security vendor NetScreen is believed to be about to snap up security start-up uRoam, according to sources close to the firm.

The acquisition would give NetScreen resellers new security products.

URoam offers a clientless virtual private network through its use of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. Though the US-based vendor has showcased the technology at UK exhibitions, it has no UK base.

Despite sources confirming the acquisition is in progress Peter Crowcombe, NetScreen's UK marketing director, said: "We don't comment on such matters."

But a source inside NetScreen told CRN: "SSL will be a useful addition to our reseller partners' armoury. If it increases their chances of winning more business, we will be delighted."

Mukesh Gupta, managing director of NetScreen distributor e92plus, said that if the deal goes ahead it could be good for the channel.

"Not only would it be a good fit for NetScreen and us, but for Vars too," he said.

"With NetScreen having more products, Vars would be able to go back to their installed base and upsell."
