2005 a year of record growth for external disk storage systems
IDC claims growth is highest since records began in 2001
Factory revenue for the external disk storage systems market grew by 12.5 per cent to $3.9bn during the third quarter of 2005, according to IDC.
The market analyst discovered that the growth was the highest recorded since the inception of its disk storage tracker in 2001 and also discovered that the total worldwide disk storage systems market grew by 13.3 per cent to $5.7bn during Q3.
Brad Nisbet, IDC program manager storage systems program, said: “Internal storage growth has exceeded external growth in three of the last four quarters, as organisations explore new technologies that increase the flexibility of storage configurations.”
EMC led the external disk storage market in terms of revenue with $786m during the quarter and 20.3 per cent market share, followed by Hewlett-Packard (HP), IBM and Dell with market shares of 19.1 per cent, 12.9 per cent and 8.4 per cent respectively.
However, vendor ranking was reversed in IDC’s worldwide total disk storage systems revenue tracker. HP led with 23.5 per cent market share, followed by IBM, EMC and Dell with 20.7 per cent, 13.7 per cent and 8.3 per cent market share respectively.
Sue Richards, managing director of VAR EBM, said: “More customers want disk storage because it’s a technology that moves them forward. 2006 may well see more revenue than ever before coming from disk for us.”
