Tesco moves into VoIP

Supermarket launches package that could have implications for the channel

Retail giant Tesco has launched a Voice over IP (VoIP) package that could raise awareness and provide service opportunities for the channel.

Tesco will roll out the VoIP package to UK consumers through its retails stores, but the move could promote the technology to potential business users.

A Tesco representative told CRN: "We plan to gradually role out the VoIP offering in store. We be selling solely through our stores and online and have no plans to use resellers or dealers."

Gordon Davies, commercial director at reseller Compusys said that Tesco will raise VoIP awareness, but warned the IT industry that Tesco could shape up as a major player in the future.

"Tesco will bring VoIP to the wider market and I would not bet against them. They can turn the IT market on its head with the cost model it has in place," added Davies.

Rob Bamforth, principal analyst at research house Quocirca, said: "If VoIP is going to reach the business user it will need a multiply of channels, with a number of additional services."

Bamforth said Tesco VoIP could also provide a long-term opportunity for resellers offering support and services for VoIP systems.

"Selling VoIP in Tesco will have a positive effect on the VoIP market as it will become a normal technology. It might not have a direct effect, but could have a halo effect," added Bamforth.
