Turnover soars in disk storage systems sector
Hewlett-Packard holds onto top spot as market maintains steady growth compared with last year
The total disk storage systems market grew by six per cent to $5.9bn during the second quarter this year compared with the same period last year, according to figures from IDC.
The analyst reported that total disk storage systems capacity shipped was 704 petabytes, representing a 51.5 per cent increase from the same period last year.
Brad Nisbet, program manager at IDC storage systems, said: “Disk storage systems vendors have invested heavily to expand their product offerings. As such, the disk storage systems market as a whole is well poised to satisfy the expected data growth associated with an expanding set of customer needs.”
According to the figures, Hewlett-Packard (HP) led the market with 24 per cent market share and a turnover of $1.4m, representing increases over the same period last year of 0.7 and 9.2 per cent respectively. HP was closely followed by IBM, which witnessed a market share decrease of 1.4 per cent to 18.9 per cent and a turnover decrease of one per cent to $1.1m.
IBM was followed by EMC, Dell, Sun and Hitachi. Each generated turnovers of $830m, $488m and $391m and $340m respectively. Sun and Hitachi saw the largest turnover growths of the quarter, with Sun growing its turnover by 13.4 per cent and Hitachi by 16.7 per cent.
James Ward, managing director of storage distributor Hammer, told CRN: “We think more and more people are using disk as their primary storage method. Tape is increasingly being used for backing up critical data because the media can be removed. This is helping to drive up the figures for disk storage.”
IDC’s research also discovered that worldwide external disk storage systems factory revenues grew by 8.5 per cent in Q2 2006 to $4.2bn, representing the 13th consecutive quarter of year-on-year growth.
According to the figures, EMC led the market with a turnover of $830m, up from $806m at the same period last year. HP and IBM closely followed, with turnover of $800m and $547m respectively. These represented individual increases of 10.3 per cent and 3.7 per cent respectively, compared with the same period last year.
