Qualstar boosts tape collection
Qualstar has announced that its TLS-2000 family of automated tape libraries supports HP DDS-3 drives.
The family comprises six models, which house one to four tape drives and up to 144 tape cartridges, yielding capacities from 216Gb to 3.5Tb.
They are designed for enterprise-wide backup, high-capacity near-online storage and data archive applications.
The models include I/O ports which eliminate the need to open the front door to remove and insert tape cartridges. A mobile barcode scanner also performs a complete cartridge inventory in less than two minutes.
Qualstar has replaced the belts and pulleys in similar designs with DC motors and lead screws, and the models also feature closed-loop motion-control systems and optical position sensors. The drives are independently powered and a filtered positive air pressure system is incorporated.
VP of marketing, Bob Colvey said: 'HP's DDS-3 technology offers solid value and performance for tape library users. Qualstar now has the most extensive line of DDS-3-based tape libraries on the market.'

Western Digital has introduced a 9.1Gb Ultra Scsi hard drive (above), which allows multiple initiators to be serviced concurrently. The WDE9100 features caching, command queuing and command reordering. The command queuing allows multiple connection to the drive, and the reordering algorithm improves the throughput of the drive my minimising both the seek and rotational latency.
