3Com's Jones is pulling the communications cord
3Com seems to have acquired a flair for the unusual since Bob Jones joined the company following the purchase of Sonix. It is poised to ship an integrated communications systems called ServiceConnect 2000. It is designed to unite the multitude of communication lines coming in and out of a branch office. Jones, who heads up marketing and sales for the product, says that end user benefits include reduced line rental charges, while central installation, maintenance and management cut out the need for technical expertise in remote sites. The modular system can incorporate telephone and fax, stock control data transfer, email, credit card authorisation, burglar and fire alarm systems, environmental control, meter reading, and the monitoring of equipment, all sharing an ISDN connection. The product is about to ship via 3Com's normal channels, although full volumes are not expected until later in the year.
