Backweb plans big push into the UK
Californian firm Backweb Technologies is looking to set up a UK channel structure in preparation for its entry into internet server technology later this month.
The company will ship its Backweb server product after showing it at Internet World on 20 to 22 May, as the company jumps on to the push technology bandwagon.
Push technology uses existing internet protocols to give both senders and receivers of information greater control over what data is received and in what form it arrives. This allows creators of internet content to broadcast information from the Backweb server as ?Info Packs? (units of information).
Jo Ann Sager, director of corporate strategy at Backweb, said: ?Push reverses the model of the Web. Instead of the user having to go look for it, it comes to them.?
Backweb?s server can be incorporated into an existing intranet. The server product is Java-compatible, and can run on a network computer-based intranet model, as long as there is a small portion of cache on the server.
The Backweb server is expected to cost about #6,400. Backweb will be giving away 30-day evaluation packs free to resellers at a series of training sessions at Internet World. Sager said training would be available to resellers.
