NEC results soar at half-way point

Japanese vendors NEC and Fujitsu both reported a surge in six-month turnovers, but while the former maintained earnings the latter saw interim net income plunge 84 per cent.

NEC's sales reached $19.9 billion and Fujitsu's rose 20 per cent to $17.6 billion. Earnings at NEC leapt 54 per cent to $271 million for the six months, while net income at Fujitsu fell 84 per cent to $35 million.

Q3 results from database firm Informix saw turnover climb 30 per cent to $238 million. Profit for the period reached $26.1 million, compared with $23.9 for Q3 last year. Turnover for the first nine months of 1996 was $668 million.

Centura Software, formerly tools company Gupta, returned to profit in Q3 on falling revenue. The firm reported a profit of $97,000 compared with a loss of $3.4 million for the same period last year.

Turnover fell $2.3 million to $14.6 million.
