An opportunity for resellers selling chip and PIN systems still exists as the latest figures from the Association of Payment Clearing Services (APACS) reveal that 15 per cent of UK retailers have still not upgraded their till systems.

In January 2005 a change in liab-ility came into effect so that any ret-ailer without chip & PIN that incurred a fraudulent transaction was liable.

Sandra Quinn, director of corporate communications at APACS, told CRN: “The late adopters are in the best position because the equipment being sold now is a lot better than the first chip & PIN systems that came out. There are a lot of vendors that make the terminals and they have all been tried and tested now.”

Karen Dyke, retail business director at VAR Triangle, said: “The big retailers all went ahead and did it, but the smaller ones have been slow to respond. However, we’re seeing much more of a move towards them adopting it now.”
