Temporary dip in spam levels
Vendor warns that the holiday season will see an increase in spam
According to Fortinet, the dip in spam levels is only a hiatus
Spam levels fell below half of all emails sent in November, but Fortinet warned this could have been a temporary hiatus.
According to the vendor’s Threatscape report, the percentage of emails tagged as spam fell to 37 per cent in mid-November following the take-down of the McColo server.
But Fortinet said that the holiday season would see an increase in spammers and key-logging malware programmers.
“We expect both these activities to quickly escalate as spam botnets find new avenues to proliferate in the wake of McColo,” said Derek Manky, project manager of cyber security and threat research at Fortinet.
