Virtualisation giant snaps up products from EMC's Ionix range to add weight to vCenter

VMware set to snap up EMC IT management products in deal worth more than £130m

Virtualisation giant VMware is set to acquire part of EMC’s Ionix IT management portfolio in a deal worth more than £130m.

The acquisition will provide VMware with the rights to a series of EMC’s IT management applications, including the datacentre efficiency technology FastScale.

VMware said the new additions to its product portfolio would enable the firm to add additional features to its vCenter family of virtualisation tools.

Paul Maritz, president and chief executive at VMware, said: “The acquisition of these Ionix products and expertise promises to further establish VMware vCenter as the management platform for next-generation private cloud infrastructures.”

As part of the deal, which is expected to be finalised in Q2 2010, EMC will retain full reseller rights to all the products in the Ionix range, including those acquired by VMware.

Jay Mastaj, senior vice president and general manager at EMC Ionix, said: “EMC Ionix has focused on helping customers simplify and automate IT management in order to accelerate their journey to the private cloud.

“Moving forward, EMC will focus Ionix technologies on groundbreaking solutions that simplify and automate the management of the information infrastructure – specifically for network, storage and private cloud solutions, including Vblocks.”
