OracleMobile enters wireless ASP space

OracleMobile, the wireless division of Oracle, is positioning itself as a wireless application service provider and has signed its first wireless integration partner, ScreamingMedia.

OracleMobile, the wireless division of Oracle, is positioning itself as a wireless application service provider (ASP) and has signed its first wireless integration partner, ScreamingMedia.

According to Jacob Christfort, chief technical officer at OracleMobile, the division had been branded as a free menu of things to come and a platform for users to build services and post content.

With the new wireless ASP (Wasp) model, OracleMobile plans to build and host wireless content through its services such as PortalToGo.

"The Wasp model removes the need for companies' IT departments to put additional time into setting up a wireless strategy," said Christfort. "The future of delivering wireless services is the hosting model, and this is where we see our future."

ScreamingMedia integrates wireless content for mobile customers and has partnered with OracleMobile to provide its customers with a packaged mobile product.

Beyond ScreamingMedia, OracleMobile also plans to establish a wireless channel to extend its mobile offerings. OracleMobile is moving all its software to the hosted model and is looking to compete with established Wasps Everypath and Aether, said Christfort.
