Cisco makes a splash with Riverhead deal
Second acquisition in a month adds DDoS capabilities to vendor's portfolio
Cisco has added distributed denial of service (DDoS) defence capabilities to its portfolio with the $39m purchase of Riverhead Networks in its second acquisition in under a month.
Jeff Platon, senior director products and technology marketing at Cisco, said: "We are trying to build a self-defending network rather than putting up a fence made of different components."
Paul Cunningham, UK services director at Cisco distributor Comstor, praised the choice of DDoS. "There has been lots of interest from resellers after much-publicised attacks," he said.
Cisco has bought more than 80 firms, including seven in 2003. Earlier this month it acquired Secure Socket Layer virtual private network vendor Twingo.
