NETWORKING FOCUS: Microsoft offers host of SNA options

Microsoft has released version 3 of its host integration software SNA Server.

The company claims the software eases the integration of IBM mainframe and AS/400 systems with Windows NT Server and PC desktops. It has almost twice the capacity of the previous version.

The enhancements enable it to integrate client/server technology, including the internet and intranets, with legacy data and reduce the communications burden on host computers and PCs.

Through server emulation, mainframe and AS/400 users can print to any printer on a Windows NT-based or Novell Lan. It can support up to 5,000 users and up to 15,000 host sessions, making it possible for fewer centralised SNA Servers to support an enterprise.

Users need only one password to sign on to Lan and host applications. Data encryption assures secure client-to-server and server-to-server communication whether local or across a Wan.

A shared folders feature allows users access without requiring special client PC code. Administration is carried out using an integrated, graphical console with a Windows 95 interface.

Microsoft SNA Server product manager KirstenWiley said: ?Customers have told us that integration with existing AS/400, mainframe and minicomputer systems is essential when choosing internet and intranet products. SNA Server provides the sophisticated application-level integration our customers need to run their businesses.?

SNA Server is available now starting at #1,020. Upgrades cost from #510.
