HP acquisition 'to benefit channel'

Trinagy business will be integrated into HP OpenView

Hewlett Packard (HP) has acquired networking software vendor Trinagy for an undisclosed sum, claiming that the move will benefit resellers.

The Trinagy business will be integrated into the HP OpenView business unit as part of the company's strategy to enhance its ebusiness software portfolio, explained George Bathurst, marketing manager for HP software.

Trinagy's software complements the OpenView network management software by being built on open architecture. It has a strong presence in the service provider market, according to Bathurst.

"This acquisition will make things easier for channel partners because they don't need to be accredited for two different brands of software; they will just need OpenView skills," he said. "It will give our resellers the capability to deliver a wider range of services to customers, in terms of both e-services and management services. What we want is a quality channel."

Bathurst added that resellers which had previously been network management specialists would have to incorporate a wide ebusiness offering. "The good thing about this acquisition is that it doesn't undermine any of our channel partners' business," he said.

David Woodall, Trinagy's chief executive, agreed. "Service providers and enterprises recognise that both uptime and performance drive business success. The integration of Trinagy capabilities with the HP OpenView portfolio provides a network management solution that leapfrogs our competition," he said.

Patty Azzarello, general manager of HP's OpenView business unit, said: "Firms must do more than simply monitor their expanding networks: they must turn them into competitive advantage. With the addition of Trinagy solutions to the HP OpenView suite, customers can better characterise the performance of their networks."

HP is in the process of contacting its channel partners about the acquisition.
