Secure Computing storms market with CipherTrust appliances

Vendor unveils Sidewinder 7.0 and WebWasher 6.5

Secure Computing has unveiled the first two appliances that incorporate reputation technology gained from its acquisition of CipherTrust.

The vendor, which acquired CipherTrust for $273.6m last year (CRN, 20 July), has claimed its Sidewinder 7.0 anti-malware firewall appliance and WebWasher 6.5 anti-malware gateway appliance offer customers a combined and consolidated product set.

Speaking to CRN, Mike Smart, European product marketing manager at Secure Computing, said: “The challenge that a lot of resellers face is the huge amount of technology on the market to combat threats. This means they have been taking a piecemeal approach, which makes overall management far more complex for both the customer and the reseller.

“Although Unified Threat Management has been around for a while, it is not only applicable to SMEs – larger enterprises want a much deeper level of security and flexibility, but without the complexity. This launch is about bringing all web security solutions onto a single platform and consolidating our technology.”

Smart said the vendor is still looking for additional resellers to join its partner programme and claimed the vendor is attracting interest from resellers of rival vendors’ products.

“We have had a positive response already from existing partners and are also talking to a number of new partners,” he added.

Tony Harbon, managing director of Secure Computing partner Clearview, said: “We have been a Secure Computing partner for 10 years and during that time have grown closer as partners. It is difficult when partnering with a lot of smaller companies because they tend to get swallowed up by the bigger players.

“We prefer to partner with a smaller number of larger companies because they are less likely to be acquired, and also give us stability and continuity of supply. Also it means we can offer our customers a wider range of technology from the same company.”

Harbon added that combined products from vendors such as Secure Computing allow resellers to attract new customers and upsell more solutions to existing customers.
