Spyglass looks to NC to lift browser?s prospects

Spyglass has secured a deal with NCD to embed its latest browser technology, Device Mosaic 1, into the company?s network computers (NCs).

The deal is seen as a boost for the software house, which last year edged away from the mainstream Wintel browser market to refocus its business on the internet device market.

Device Mosaic is designed to Web-enable a range of non-PC devices, including televisions, set-top boxes, screen phones, game consoles and NCs.

David Harris-Evans, MD of Spyglass Europe, said: ?Spyglass is able to convert content to a form that is capable of utilising the display on the client device, whatever that may be.

?Every one of those spaces is showing exciting activity at the moment.? But he pointed out that it was hard to predict which of these will deliver the most volume.

According to Harris-Evans, Spyglass continues to provide technology to Microsoft, but this now accounts for less than 10 per cent of its overall business.

Spyglass also announced an OEM deal with printing giant Xerox, which has licensed the company?s Microserver product for monitoring office equipment from a PC.

Jay Friedland, vice president of marketing at Spyglass, said Microserver will enable users to monitor toner intake and wear and tear on products from their desktops. The browser technology, Spyglass Device Mosaic 1, is designed in a modular fashion, so it can be scaled to fit any internet access device with 1.7Mb of Ram, including consumer electronics and, potentially, Web mobile phones.
