Police force rolls out single sign-on access

Enline secures a five-figure deal with Staffordshire Police

VAR Enline has secured a five-figure deal to implement a single sign-on (SSO) access system across the entire Staffordshire Police network.

The system, which will cover 4,500 users and has been running as a pilot, is based on technology from SSO appliance vendor Imprivata. Known as OneSign, the system will be rolled out over the next 10 days and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2005.

Mike Nelsey, managing director of Enline, said: “Most police forces have the pain of multiple passwords on their legacy applications, and Staffordshire Police had around 45 different applications with an average of seven passwords per user. People were using the same password, sharing applications and not logging off, which made auditing and control very difficult.

“The good thing about Imprivata’s appliance is that it does exactly what it says on the tin: users will now only need to remember one secure password to access every application.”

Ron Bentley, IS programme manager at Staffordshire Police, said: “We have been looking for a number of years for a suitable technology solution for single sign-on.

“Many of our users are content with the technology they are using, but the biggest bone of contention has been password management. We are confident that Enline’s solution meets our requirements,” he said.

Wayne Parslow, vice-president of European operations at Imprivata, added: “Having successfully demonstrated suitability against some key applications, we’re delighted to have helped Staffordshire Police become the first to achieve a true single sign-on capability.”
