Symantec launches version 7 of its Enterprise Vault
Security vendor to ship the backup software through distributors and VARs
Symantec has launched version 7 of its Enterprise Vault (EV) backup software. It has claimed this will unite the technologies between the security vendor and storage vendor Veritas, which it acquired in 2005.
Fredrik Sjostedt, senior manager for EMEA product marketing enterprise messaging management at Symantec, told CRN that EV7 has brought together the security element of its own software with the storage and archiving software of Veritas.
“Email is mission critical, but so is instant message, SharePoint and web collaboration,” he said. “So they need to not only be as secure as possible, but also to be archived correctly.”
Sjostedt added that EV has three main elements. First, that all email is not created equal, therefore EV is content aware to help end-users archive correctly. Second, EV integrates with Symantec’s other products and a reseller or user can set common policies among the entire infrastructure. Finally, EV7 has increased functionality, especially around Microsoft Exchange.
Sjostedt said that the firm intends to ship EV7 through its value-added distributors, as well as the backup and archiving VARs it inherited when it acquired Veritas.
“We want to help our traditional security VARs to sell this product,” he said. “We want to broaden our channel and provide training for this to both Symantec and Veritas VARs.”
Martin West, Symantec business manager at distributor Horizon Clarity Technology, said: “Symantec has been pushing this product hard and the market seems ready for it. We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the numbers of quotes we’re giving out.”
Jon Collins, service director at analyst Freeform Dynamics, said: “Symantec’s rhetoric has been based around cross selling, and its traditional sales method is through the channel. This means that companies selling one strand of Symantec’s offering can now take the other side of the story to their customers.”
