Microsoft tipped to buy security firm

MS ponders move for Network Associates

Speculation is mounting in the channel that Microsoft is preparing to swoop on security giant Network Associates (NAI).

Some partners have said acquiring NAI, which recently launched a new channel programme, would allow Microsoft to compete with security rivals such as Symantec, Computer Associates and Trend Micro.

One reseller, which asked to remain anonymous, said: "Security is a key area and Microsoft needs to boost its security offering, but whether this would be a good move for the industry as a whole remains to be seen."

Clive Longbottom, service director at analyst Quocirca, said: "There is a lot of investment in the security market with people sniffing around the smaller vendors, and Microsoft has been tub-thumping about security.

"The move is not beyond the realms of possibility."

Both Microsoft and NAI declined to comment.
