Flexi disc is five times thinner than a CD

US startup Thin Disc Media has revealed that it has developed a flexible digital disc up to five times thinner than standard CDs.

US startup Thin Disc Media has revealed that it has developed a flexible digital disc up to five times thinner than standard CDs.

The Flexi CDs, as they have been dubbed, carry the same amount of data as standard digital discs and the reduced width of the disc means that production costs are estimated to be half that of current CD technology.

The company intends to focus its sales efforts on the media, entertainment and marketing industries. It promotes the discs' bendable quality as a marketing tool by wrapping it around day-to-day items such as drinking bottles.

However, what could be potentially damaging to the acceptance of the new format is that it requires an adaptor to be played in current CD and DVD players. Vendors also need specialist machinery to print the discs.

Interest in the technology has been strong, following Thin Disc's announcement that it has so far raised $4.1m from private investors including Hollywood-based production company Rainmaker Digital.

The company needs another $20m of investment to finish building its factory.
