Symantec inks Huawei venture

Vendor prepares to rejoin the security and storage appliance market

Symantec is set to leap back into the security appliance market through a joint venture with Chinese telecoms vendor Huawei.

The new unit, which will be 51 per cent owned by Huawei, will develop security and storage appliances for both carriers and enterprises.

Last June Symantec announced that it would wind down further development of its Symantec Gateway Security (SGS) and Symantec Network Security (SNS) products .

Jason Rabbets, managing director at Symantec VAR Storpoint, said: “This makes sense on the basis that we’re seeing increased interest for storage security, both in-flight and static. If the joint venture brings that type of appliance product to market it would certainly address a need.”
