Waste management: Sims has acquired Wincanton's processing plants

Sims Recycling Solutions has acquired the recycling division of rival IT disposal firm Wincanton PLC for £17.5m.

Under the terms of the deal, Sims will take ownership of Wincanton’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) processing plants in Billingham and Daventry, as well as its sorting centres in Harlow and Widnes.

Sims also confirmed that the 146 staff Wincanton’s recycling division employs will move across following a period of consultation.

Graham Davy, global chief executive of Sims, said the deal would extend the company’s reach into the retail sector.

He said: “[Wincanton’s] retailer-led capability and logistics expertise, together with its infrastructure, ideally complements our own business model.”

Graeme McFaull, Wincanton’s chief executive, said: “Wincanton has built a successful recycling business over the last seven years, with the support and dedication of its employees.

“The future of the business will be enhanced as part of a specialist operator in the sector."
