Cisco upgrades IOS secure functionality
New firewalls and network admin tools bolster internet operating system security
Cisco is strengthening its security play with the launch of new features for its internet operating system (IOS), and the acquisition of a security vendor.
The networking giant's IOS Software Release 12.3T is part of its self-defending network (SDN) strategy, which sets out to embed security onto networks to protect against a range of security threats.
As well as new firewalls and network administration tools, Cisco has unveiled IP Source Tracker, which helps networks react to denial of service attacks.
John Donovan, UK channel director at the vendor, said despite Cisco's dominance in the security appliance market, the channel is vital in adding support and services.
"Customers are looking for managed security services, not just boxes," he said.
Keith Humphreys, managing consultant at EuroLAN Research, said the security and networking markets should be classed as one.
"Cisco has its SDN strategy right, but you still have to buy multiple products to be secure," he said.
Separately, Cisco has acquired Secure Socket Layer virtual private network (VPN) vendor Twingo Systems. Its Virtual Secure Desktop will be incorporated into Cisco's WebVPN offering.
