Compel Group wins public-sector deal worth £5m

VAR to provide consultancy services to government department

VAR Compel Group has won a public-sector contract worth more than £5m to provide consultancy services to an as yet unnamed government department.

Under the terms of the contract, which is expected to run for about 18 months, Compel will assist the government department in the upgrade and re-engineering of its existing Oracle/Peoplesoft software across various applications.

Neville Davis, chief executive of Compel, said in a statement that winning the contract will give the company a massive boost.

“I believe we were chosen as a result of our excellent track record for delivery in this area, as well as our pre-eminent position in the broader Oracle market,” he said.

The contract, which will also be operated in conjunction with a support services firm, will encompass human resources, financials, protect costing, budgeting, forecasting, contract billing and project forecasting for the government department.

Elaine Axby, principal analyst at Quocirca, told CRN that the contract could prove fruitful for Compel, but stressed that it is not a unique public-sector contract.

“[Consultancy] is quite a common type of contract to win in the public sector,” she said. “However, it may well prove to involve quite a bit of customisation work for Compel.”

The contract win comes just a week after the firm hailed its 2006 financial year a success after posting results that beat market expectations (CRN Online, 19 September).

Turnover for the year increased 17 per cent for the year ended 30 June 2006 to £92.6m, compared with £79m in 2005. Pre-tax profit leapt by 68 per cent to £2.3m, compared with £1.3m last year.
