Tiscali's QoS over DSL launches at last
Cisco-based service gets off the ground after a year's development
ISP Tiscali has launched a business Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) offering that provides QoS over broadband.
The service, which is based on Cisco networking kit, has been in development for over a year, and was rumoured to have been close to launching in March last year. However, the firm if still ahead of the competition because no other firm is offering the service yet, Rivals also appear to be unable to match the service's price.
"Vertical sectors such as retail, the public sector, hospitals and the leisure industry, construction and finance have all used our DSL VPNs," said Lance Spencer, product manager at Tiscali UK.
"Many in retail, for example, have realised that they can use DSL for telephony and VoIP [voice over IP]. The construction industry is also interested in CCTV cameras."
Richard Betts, managing director of IDL Mettoni, an IP telephony (IPT) application vendor, was upbeat. "Anything that opens up the IPT opportunity is a good thing," he said. "Once IPT is on the desk, the customers are going to ask what they can do with it."
