Fujitsu Siemens Computers has outlined its desktop strategy for Europe, focusing on corporates, SMEs and emerging PC markets.

The company, which formed last October with the aim of becoming the number-one desktop PC vendor in Europe by 2001, has unified its product line and will be launching a major channel offensive to take market share from its nearest rivals on 1 April.

It aims to ship about 4.7 million units this year.

Scenic will be the company's brand for all professional PCs, with the Scenic e Series targeting SME users and the Scenic x Series aimed at large corporate customers. It has announced four e Series PCs - the eD, eT, eB and eL models - which range from entry-level computers to PCs running up to 800MHz processors. These models will be available through the channel from March.

The Scenic x Series will be launched in the second quarter of the year and will include xS, xD and xL models, with an emphasis on security, manageability and ergonomics, the company said.

There are also plans to introduce a small-footprint PC in the middle of this year, incorporating advanced technologies and features.

The company's strategy on emerging markets is based on the Microsoft and Intel-backed Easy PC initiative, aimed at first-time users or consumers who want more than one PC in their home. Easy PC focuses on ease of use features, including preconfiguration, USB expansion and smaller footprints.

The first offering in the Easy PC range is the Celvin, based on AMD's EasyNow! platform design which replaces series and parallel ports with five USB ports. The design offers the Advanced Configuration Powermanagement Interface which reduces the start-up time and integrates audio, graphics and modem technology in the chipset to save space. Two Celvin models will be available from March, one based on AMD's entry-level K6-II 450MHz processor and the other based on the forthcoming K6-2+ processor.

Fujitsu Siemens will also introduce two consumer lines at the CeBIT 2000 trade show in Germany this month.
