Intel launches Wi-Fi adaptor
Tri-band module supports all three major WLAN standards
Intel has introduced a tri-band wireless LAN (WLAN) adaptor and configuration software to its Centrino mobile architecture.
New security capabilities for enterprises support the latest Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 802.11i standard.
"Wi-Fi networks are proliferating, but users have worries over security and how hard it will be to connect," said Jim Johnson, vice-president of the wireless networking group at Intel.
The Pro/Wireless 2915ABG adaptor is Intel's first module to support the three major WLAN standards: 802.11a, b and g. Other manufacturers are already offering tri-band cards.
Intel is also offering version 9.0 of its ProSet Wireless client software. This includes a new feature to help roaming users connect to multiple wireless networks.
"It's about time. There have been so many multimode cards out," said Nick Evans, head of Microsoft and mobility at reseller IT Partnerships.
"This will make life easier. Most people don't know the ins and outs of 802.11 a, b and g."
