MTI claims 'technical leader' crown

Data storage and management solution provider MTI has announced the launch of its departmental storage solution, MTI Vivant S200. The new product is aimed at medium-sized to large enterprises that require a more 'technical' storage solution.

"We understand that EMC is the market leader," said Roger Bearman, MTI European business development manager. "However, we like to think of ourselves as the 'technical leader'. We believe we provide more flexible answers to more complex storage problems."

The S200 will enable MTI to cover a larger market area, and is a scaled down member of the Vivant family. Bearman called the product a "San [storage area network] in a box".

"This is providing both a San and a network attached storage offering without the complications of installing a San. Both can be used in the same system, in whichever quantities the client prefers," he said.

The fibre channel-based Vivant provides up to 1.7Tb of storage across 24 drives in a 20in box and can be used in Unix, Windows NT and Linux environments.

Electronic payment company Ingenico Fortronic, a client of MTI, claims the firm's product had enabled it to have "continuous access to information".

Tracy MacCleod, senior product manager at Ingenico, said: "We have just launched our Estate Management System, which links all the cash swipe machines we have to a central system. The amount of information coming into that system is huge. We needed constant access, and MTI has proved to be flexible, resilient and scalable. It gave us a two-way mirroring system with total security and access."

Bearman explained that MTI has a channel which is mainly made up from existing partners. "We have tried traditional channel methods, but they didn't work. Now we use more specific distributors, and cannot have resellers selling to just anyone. We need to have a relationship with the end user, to ensure we have given them a suitable solution," he said.

"The correct management of storage allows staff and businesses to concentrate on their core business. We have to work with resellers to attain business," he added.
