Users panic over Magic memo

Network Associates has been forced to calm panic-stricken customers after an internal memo concerning the future of recently acquired Magic Solutions' products fell into the hands of rival vendor Ben Data.

According to a source, Network Associates had initially anticipated upgrading users of Magic Solutions' kit to MacAfee's Helpdesk products, rather than continuing to market two versions of Support Magic.

Magic Solutions was acquired in March for $110 million.

But although the decision was later changed, the initial email was leaked to Ben Data Europe - Magic Solution's closest rival.

The memo was distributed to a number of Network Solutions' customers who, according to a source, were then contacted by Ben Data Europe offering its rival product Heat.

The source pointed out: 'Customers contacting Network Associates are confused about what is happening with products.'

Steve Cavallo, managing director for Network Associates Northern Europe, said: 'We have asked Ben Data to stop distributing this email and it has agreed to stop circulating the document.'

Cavallo confirmed that a legal letter had been sent to Ben Data on 12 May but he refused to discuss the content.

A source claimed that Ben Data has been using an internal company document which was considered to be private property.

Anthony Probert, managing director Ben Data, vehemently denied obtaining an email or sending anything to customers.
