RDC grabs coveted security standard

ISO 27001 standard adds to its integrated management system offering

Information security and physical protection of assets play a vital role in the refurbished computer market

Computacenter’s asset management arm RDC has passed a stringent five-day assessment period to grab the information security management standard ISO 27001.

The Witham-based firm, which employs more than 200 people, handles over a million items of IT equipment each year, selling refurbished computers and components to more than 65 countries.

It claims to be one of a handful of firms globally that operate an integrated management system registered to internationally recognised standards for security, quality, environment and safety management.

Gerry Hackett, RDC’s managing director, said: “Information security and the physical protection of assets have played a fundamental part in the company’s business model and contributed to the continued growth and success of the business.

“As RDC has grown and moved to larger premises, employed more people and increased stockholding, so security has also been adapted and improved.”

Gary Griffiths, head of sustainability at RDC, said: “RDC became certified to ISO 27001 to assure existing and potential clients that their information will be securely and safely managed.”

He added that achieving the standard was no mean feat.

“We had to identify the security risks associated with its operations, evaluate the impact of security failures and develop controls to mitigate the risks. New policies, procedures and security controls had to be developed and people trained and made aware of the need to use them.”
