Jackson exit forces Compaq to rethink channel line-up
Compaq partners were stunned by the surprise announcement of the resignation of the vendor's channel expert Ian Jackson, who is due to leave the manufacturer after 10 years.
A representative for Compaq confirmed that Jackson, director of channel sales at Compaq, is due to retire at the end of the year. His departure comes at a particularly embarrassing time for the manufacturer, which is due to hold a briefing this week revealing details of its UK management team in the aftermarth of the Digital takeover. It was previously thought that Jackson would play an important part in the team.
One source said: 'Ian Jackson is seen as part of Compaq's furniture.
He was like Nelson's Column. It will be a real shame to see him go.'
The Compaq representative said Nick Offin, Compaq's direct channel sales manager, would be appointed as Jackson's replacement. He has worked with Jackson for the past five years.
Jackson's departure also co-incided with the departure of Hugh Jenkins, server product manager at Compaq.
In a statement, Compaq said: 'It is with regret that we announce Jenkin's departure from Compaq after more than 10 years. He has helped Compaq establish itself in the server market, especially Windows NT.'
A decision is expected within the next few weeks over who will replace Jenkins. In the meantime, James Stevenson, director of Compaq's enterprise division, will take on the additional responsibility.
One observer said: 'It is surprising that Compaq people are leaving instead of the Digital ones as this is what we all expected to happen.'
