Seagate's Drive is One of a Wind

Seagate Technology has entered the mid-range server market with the launch of the Sidewinder 50, a tape drive based on Sony?s advanced intelligent tape technology.

It features a self cleaning head, advanced metal evaporated media, a compact form factor and a memory in cassette (MIC) feature. MIC is a 16Kbit, programmable memory chip, built into the data cartridge, which holds the reference area for the tape, speeding access to files and tape load time, since it does not need to read or write the reference area on tape.

The drive has a capacity of up to 50Gb with data compression (25Gb native) and transfers data at up to 6Mb per second. It is also available in an internal 3.5in form factor, for integration into a range of systems. Both the 5.25in and external models are available at the 50Gb capacity point. The drives run on a Fast/Wide SCSI-2 interface.
