Projector sales rocket

Small form-factor projectors set to become a $500m market by 2010

Sales of small form-factor projectors are set to boom, making it a $500m market by 2010, according to research from Pacific Media Associates (PMA).

The research forecasts that sales of ‘pocket’ projectors will reach 20,000 units for 2006, but will rapidly increase to more than 1.5m units by 2010. Pocket projector revenues over the same period are predicted to jump from $15m to $500m.

Michael Abramson, vice-president for front projectors at PMA, said: “While pocket projectors are still early in their development, we see enormous potential for these products.”

Abramson said pocket projectors are currently used as standalone products, but by 2008 they will be designed to attach directly to a range of mobile business and consumer devices.

Tracy Barrow, business development manager for audiovisual products at distributor Computer 2000, said: “We are shipping pocket projectors from Toshiba and Samsung, and it is a case of so far, so good.”

Barrow warned the brightness quality of pocket projectors will need to be improved to sustain the growth projected by PMA.

“Everyone I have shown the pocket projector to has bought one,” she said. “End-users see the projector and buy it straight away as it is a gadget-type product and can fit in a laptop case.”
