Here's An Apple For The Teacher

Apple Macintosh is due to release a portable computer for students and teachers, the Apple Emate 300. It is a companion to Mac OS and Windows software-based machines.

Designed to let students take it wherever they are learning ? at home, in a lab, outside ? the Emate 300 is lightweight, and sturdy. It comes with the principal functions of a notebook ? built-in applications, built-in speakers and input/ output ports, but has no CD or floppy disk drives.

The operating system it uses is based on the Newton system, developed for the Newton 2. It includes wordprocessing and spreadsheet software, a drawing program, an address book and calendar functions.

The Emate 300?s TCP/IP capabilities give students access to the Web.

The Emate 300 has a IRDA port for transferring data at 115kbps. It has a 480 x 320 pixel greyscale LCD display showing 16 shades of grey.

It is compatible with Apple printers, and with the Newton Print Pack and can also be used with PC printers.

Its battery provides up to 24 hours of continuous use. The Emate 300 weighs 1.8kg, and measures 305 x 290 x 53mm.

It will be available in the UK at the end of the summer, and is expected to cost #500.
