Workstation cuts at SGI
Silicon Graphics has launched a new workstation and reduced prices of its existing range of entry-level workstation products in the wake of two poor financial quarters.
The company has cut about 20 per cent off the price of Mips R10000 175MHz O2 workstations, and the Indigo Impact workstation has been brought down in price by between 10 per cent and 20 per cent.
A new range of workstations, called Octane, has been released to target the mid to high-end of the market.
Andrew Spybey, SGI UK PR manager, said the moves reflect the work done to refresh the firm?s products. ?We have replaced our entire range, this takes time and the move is not a reaction to the financial results.
?In the last quarter of 1996, we were unable to meet demand but we expect to ship about half of our backlog this quarter.?
