High street retailer PC World has launched what it claims is the first 1Ghz laptop in the UK. The Advent 6410 is part of PC World's own brand range of computers and provides 1Ghz of processing power.

According to the company, the computer is the "fastest laptop processor on the market" and can "offer power previously unsurpassed whether used for business or leisure".

The Advent boasts 128Mb of memory, a 20Gb hard disk, 56K modem and an 8Mb video card. A DVD player comes as standard, and the laptop works on Microsoft's Windows ME operating system.

The laptop runs on an Intel Pentium III-based processor, and has a 14.1in thin film transistor display. A special casing has been designed for the laptop to allow air to circulate more efficiently, producing a better cooling system to counteract heat generated by the processor.

Heidi Swain, category marketing manager for PC World, said: "The 6410 is a machine that targets both businesses and consumers."

She added that the computer is "another step forward for the processing power of laptops, bringing their functionality and capabilities closer to those of their desktop counterparts".

The Advent 6410 is available now priced at £1999 including VAT.
