Laplink looks to move PCs

Software vendor Laplink Software has claimed it can hike up sales of PCs for resellers with its PC Mover product.

“Intel’s latest research revealed that migration is a key inhibitor for businesses looking to upgrade their PCs,” said Thomas Koll, chairman of Laplink. “PC Mover enables users to migrate all their applications, files and settings from their old PC to their new one.”

Rob Pickering, Laplink’s UK region manager, said: “It was interesting talking to retailers’ helpdesks. We asked if we buy a new PC, how do we get everything over? They said they’d recommend getting a Cat 5 cable and doing it all from the install disks, and that there was no other way of doing it. Now resellers can buy the software from us and charge users to migrate their applications.”

But Bob Tarzey, service director at Quocirca, said: “This is not a unique idea. Both Computer Associates and Symantec have products for PC migration. It is quite important to be able to move data around and transfer files easily, so there is certainly a demand for this type of product.”
