Businesses warned of increasing cybercrime
Symantec report highlights increasingly sophisticated cybercriminals
Cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated at targeting businesses, which is leading to an increase in the theft of confidential information, Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report has revealed.
The report, which is carried out every six months, covered the period between July and December 2006 and found that online attacks were becoming more coordinated.
The volume of Trojans in the top 50 malicious code samples increased to 45 per cent, up from 23 per cent in the last reporting period and the number of unique phishing messages hit an average of 904 per day.
Ollie Whitehouse, security researcher at Symantec, said: “Historically, threats were based around only one or two methods of stealing data, but attackers are now using multiple attack techniques.”
Mark Evans, director of VAR Imerja, said: “The findings do not surprise us given the steady increase we have experienced in demand for security solutions and services.
“However, there still needs to be greater awareness of the complexity of modern day threats, ensuring people’s behaviour does not leave them susceptible.”
