Centresoft scoops Sony supply deal

Centresoft has managed to beat off rivals to retain the coveted sole supply contract for Sony?s Playstation console for another year.

Sony confirmed last week that it had renewed its contract with Centresoft after it put the contract out to tender to rival distributors, believed to have included Gem and Ingram Micro.

Ray Maguire, UK MD at Sony, said: ?Centresoft has proved itself over the past 18 months. We always knew it would take a lot of beating.? Centresoft was awarded the initial contract in September 1995 when the console was first introduced.

Centresoft MD Richard Steel said: ?It was never a foregone conclusion that we would maintain the relationship, but having done so, it is our intention to set even higher levels of service and new benchmarks that will act as continuous performance monitors.?

Sales of Sony?s playstation in the week ended 29 March reached 50,000, the largest single week of sales of the console since Christmas 1996.
