Amplicon hunts for CCTV VARs

Vendor signs new distributor ahead of anticipated boom

Darren Saxby: Digital CCTV footage is high enough quality to be used as evidence in court.

Vendor Amplicon has signed distributor RS Components to push its new range of industrial Ethernet switches to the UK channel.

RS already carries Amplicon’s industrial PC offering, but has been charged with recruiting VARs that are backing up CCTV deployments in environments such as factories and industrial estates.

Darren Saxby, divisional sales manager at Brighton-based Amplicon, said the move to capture every detail of life on digital CCTV will spark a boom in the market for outdoor Ethernet switches.

The admission by police chiefs that CCTV cameras were not good enough to fight crime will create a surge in demand for digital systems, he added.

“People realise the limitations of analogue CCTV. But with digital CCTV you get a picture quality that can be used in court, and you have a searchable stock of images,” Saxby explained.

“People do not want to have to send an engineer out to fix a problem with a telemetry system in an East Anglian waterworks, when digital networking means you can fix the problem from your desk,” he said.

However, distributor RS seemed more guarded about the products.

Market development manager, Julian Wood, said: “Any product we put in our catalogue is fit for purpose and will have been checked. Anything we sell will be suitable for the application that is advertised.”
