Compaq opens online path to customers

Clients can now go direct to resellers

Compaq is enhancing its online ordering system to allow customers to place orders directly with resellers. The company's ActiveAnswers configuration tool, which is on its main UK website, was linked to the online marketplace last month.

The PC maker currently uses Acequote's software platform for the subscription-based Compaq Marketplace, where businesses can request quotations for tenders from Compaq resellers.

Customers previously had to fax or phone a reseller which they wanted to deal with, but a request can now be sent automatically to the Marketplace.

Users input their requests into the configuration tool, which allows them to specify their system requirements, and resellers which can match these can then send quotes.

Since March 2001, the Marketplace has generated over £9m worth of business for Compaq partners.

John Booker, managing director at reseller Storm, said: "Turnover generated [by the scheme] is not the main benefit because we are being introduced to new customers and can increase business."
