VAT fraudster awaits his fate

Government's Revenue and Customs Protection Office (RCPO) drives trial to get multi-million pound VAT charge paid

The case against a fraudster involved in a £12m computer chip VAT scam has been adjourned until later this month.

Raymond May from Bromley in south London, was ordered to repay £3.2m to the government after he was convicted for his part in a multi-million pound VAT fraud back in 2002.

Despite a number of appeals over the years against the order to repay - made by the government’s Revenue and Customs Prosecutions Office (RCPO) - he has failed to settle his debts and could now face up to a five-year jail sentence.

May appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court last week, where District Judge Purdy adjourned the case until 26 October, when a final verdict will be delivered.
