Compaq uses pocket science
The Compaq PC Companion is pocket sized, weighs less than 1lb, and the company hopes it will provide users with seamless PC connectivity.
Liz Harbord, Compaq senior portable product manager, said: 'The companion provides users with better access to information from their desktop computers, portable PCs and corporate networks, wherever they are.'
The device supports the Microsoft Windows CE OS, an open standards-based scalable platform designed for products that are extensions of Windows-based PCs. It also comes with pocket versions of Word and Microsoft Excel.
Two models are available: 2Mb and 4Mb. The interface is Windows 95.
Bundled with the machine is Desktop to Go from Data Viz. This software adds the capability to synchronise, import and convert files with wordprocessing and other software applications. Using Mail on the Run, from River Run Software, the product also allows access to Microsoft Mail and Lotus cc:mail.
Optional extras available with most models include memory expansion, a rechargable battery pack, convenience cradle, AC adaptor, battery charger, power pack, 10Mb of flash Ram, carrying case and a slipcase.
The machines are available now through Compaq's US channels and will be available in the UK in mid 1997.
