Hewlett Packard (HP) last week unveiled a range of pre-paid 'e-service packages' that could revolutionise reseller business.
Dubbed 'packetising' by HP, the units cover storage and networking and come with fully configured hardware, including training. A reseller will pay a flat rate and work only on installation and supporting the end user.
Borel Setton, marketing director at the company, said: "Sales through the channel need to change and we can help resellers to concentrate on educating and servicing the customers. That is where the margin is."
Exact details of specific package contents and a breakdown of the ranges available have yet to be decided, but Setton said HP would be looking to ship e-service packages in the next six months.
Bill Hill, founder of reseller group Office Centre Central, said: "The reseller name will become redundant if this scheme works. Compaq tried a similar idea but did not spread it anywhere else, so that raises questions."
