CD takeover at WH Smith

WH Smith has rolled out CD-ROM ranges to a further 100 stores ditching Megadrive and Snes software in the process.

Top ten CD-ROM best seller ranges are selling through 200 of the chain's 500 outlets while Playstation hardware and software has boosted its instore presence from 90 to 120 stores.

According to software buyer Alan Carter, software sales across the chain have doubled since the latest roll out with a 400% increase in its top selling multimedia product Wallace & Gromit.

Carter said games still accounted for around 60% of the chain's software sales.

Compaq PCs have been ditched from the newsagent supremo's multimedia centres as part of the revamp although according to Compaq's David Miles, the manufacturer's products were still being sold through Smith's "in a subdued form".

Smith's moved into multimedia in April 1995.
