Averatec employs Ingram Micro as mail model
Broadliner signs up to improve laptop manufacturer's market share
Ingram Micro has signed an exclusive UK distribution deal with fledgling laptop manufacturer Averatec, to help it build market share.
The deal will see the broadliner focus on the mail order and SME market on behalf of the vendor, which has already notched up considerable success in the US with its thin and light notebook range.
Initially Ingram will sell four products: two 12in notebooks - the AMD Sempron-powered 3260 and the Intel Centrino 3300 - the C3500 Tablet PC and the 15in 6240, which is a combined DVD player and computer.
Andy King, UK general manager at Averatec, said: "No one in the UK has heard of Averatec. It is owned by Trigem, which is the third-largest PC manufacturing company in the world, making PCs for other brands such as Gateway in the US and eMachines in the UK.
"We are looking to capitalise on our success in the US and are hoping to differentiate ourselves in the UK on price. A lot of tier-one competitors have different rates for business and consumer customers, but we are offering the same aggressively priced machines to both sets of customers."
King said the vendor chose Ingram because of its reputation.
"Ingram is one of the biggest UK distributors, and it has the right route to market and good contacts," he said.
David Hogg, business manager for Averatec at Ingram, claimed there is room in the market for another notebook vendor.
"We have a specific market in mind. Averatec's competitive pricing and the products themselves will be key selling points among both mail order and SME customers. We believe there is demand for these products in the market," he said.
