Smartcode sale bolsters 3Com

3Com has acquired a French wireless data communications and internet access software firm, Smartcode Technologie, to strengthen its Palm computing platform.

In a $17.5 million cash deal, Smartcode's 33-strong workforce will help create 3Com's European development centre in Montpellier, France. Smartcode develops applications such as internet email and Web fax services.
