X Marks a First for White Pine

Developer of multi-platform and internetworking software, White Pine Software, has launched what it claims is the world?s first browser-based PC X-Server.

The Web Term X was designed to allow for broad functionality on delivering the most important benefits of X technology to the desktop through the browser interface.

It can facilitate access to host computers through Web pages, and can connect to multiple hosts simultaneously. It supports REXEC, RSH and XDMCP connections, and has 32-bit applications for Win 95 and NT.

The product supports all Windows-compliant 8-, 16- and 24-bit displays, as well as windows-compliant keyboards and pointing devices. It supports CDE, Motif, Open Windows, HP-VUE, SGI and generic X, host-based window managers.

Scott Hailey, network engineer at McDonnell Douglas, said: ?The package allows you to open an X Windows session through your Web browser, a very powerful concept. It is something that we are looking to implement in a program for our customers. It has the possibility to simplify a user?s desktop interface considerably.?

The Web Term X will be distributed through E92 Plus. It will cost just over #100 per user or about #170 for the Web Term Administrator.
